It's safe to say that the most popular player in baseball is Angels star Shohei Ohtani. I mean not since the Great Depression have we seen a player who's been able to put up the numbers Ohtani has while being a two-way player. Like look at his numbers this year

Batting: .273/.356/.519, .875 OPS, 34 HR, 95 RBIs, 143 wRC+, 145 OPS+, .385 xwOBA

Pitching: 166 Innings, 2.33 ERA, 219 K, 44 BB, 1.09 WHIP, 16 QS, 172 ERA+, 2.40 FIP

Those numbers are great for a position player or a pitcher. Like if an outfielder posted those hitting numbers, he would be considered one of the better hitters in the game. The same goes for the pitching stats. The fact that you get the production of two all-star players in one guy. It's no wonder many people consider him to be the best player in baseball.

Now you would think with how good Ohtani is, the Angels would want to lock him down long-term. If he continues to put up numbers like this, he will go down as one of the best players to ever play the game. You would think the Angels would want to make him an Angel for life. When you think of Ohtani, you think of the Los Angles Angles. However, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Look it's been rumored for a while that Artie Moreno was getting ready to sell the Angels. It seemed like a question of when it was going to happen, more than if it was going to happen. However, as of yesterday, it's being reported that Moreno isn't ready to part with the team yet and will stay as the owner for the foreseeable future. Which lead to this tweet.

The strong perception around the league was that Moreno’s decision to walk away from more than $2.5 billion made it far less likely that Ohtani, a free agent after this season, would stay in Anaheim. He was already viewed as a likely goner, but one never knows what a new owner could have done to convince him to commit. -Andy Martino SNY

Basically, with Moreno holding on to the team, Ohtani is done in Anaheim. Moreno isn't going to give him the contract he deserves and he is going to find that contract somewhere else. And there is one man ready to give him that contract.

That's right the Mets and Steve Cohen are gearing up to make a run at Shohei Ohtani. Let's be honest if the Mets are interested and Ohtani hits the open market they become the automatic favorites. They have the advantage of being able and willing to spend as much money as possible. Look at this offseason, the Mets were prepared to spend 800 million dollars. Now it's less than that because of Correa ultimately not signing, but that much money, shows the Mets aren't afraid to spend, which is good because Ohtani is going to demand a lot of money. Look at the stats from before, he produces the same as two all-star caliber players. The price tag is going to start at around 40 million a year. There are even rumors that is going to get a 500 million-dollar contract.

Now the only way the Mets don't get him is if another team trades for him before the season starts or at the deadline, then signs him to a long-term extension. This is kinda digging your own grave, you're going to have to essentially trade your entire farm system, plus some guys on the big league roster to get him. Ohtani is good, but don't set the franchise back 5 years. The smart move for the Mets is to sit back and wait for him to hit the open market. Because if he's on the open market, it's simply about dollars, something the Mets have plenty of.
